Double Cleansing

So many of us focus on the skincare products we apply after washing our face without realising that cleansing is not only the first, but perhaps one of the most important skincare steps. Your cleanser is responsible for clearing away environmental pollution, SPF and makeup that accumulate on our skin throughout the day, and without proper cleansing, you’re getting your skincare routine off on the wrong foot.

Double cleansing is a method of cleansing your face twice: First, with an oil or balm and again with a water-based cleanser. This ensures a deep clean (without stripping the skin) and helps to prevent skin aging and breakouts.

Suffering from mask-ne?

Double cleansing can help remove stubborn, pore-clogging and acne-causing impurities that can remain on the skin even after washing your face once, including sebum, which is overproduced when someone has acne. AND because cleansing balms/oils are hydrating, you wont damage the skin barrier, and in turn cause more oil/sebum production, as can happen with foaming cleansers.

Prevent skin aging

Double cleansing is especially important if you live in a major city and are being exposed to high pollution levels.

Dr Katherine Armour explains “Whilst there are no rigorous scientific trials that show the anti-aging benefits of double cleansing, there is plenty of evidence that suggests pollution and environmental toxins can accelerate skin aging.”

Double cleansing is a great pre-step to your active skincare, and may even help aid the penetration of your serums and creams.
