“DNA repair enzymes in skincare is still a new concept for most people, but their effectiveness has been proven.”

Dermatologist, Dr Katherine Armour.

To understand how DNA repair enzymes benefit our skin, we must first have a basic understanding of skin anatomy and what causes the visible signs of aging.

Why our skin needs DNA Repair Enzymes

Every day, our skin is exposed to what is known as free radicals (also referred to as ROS or reactive oxygen species). Free radicals are generated by environmental stressors such as UV, pollution, smoking, white cell activation and cell metabolism. When activated, free radicals cause damage to DNA, resulting in dull and dry skin, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and age spots.

Whilst broad-spectrum SPF and antioxidants (such as resveratrol, vitamin C, astaxanthin and niacinamide) are great for scavenging free radicals and preventing damage, they cannot repair the damage to DNA that has already occurred, and that is where DNA repair enzymes come in.

Although benefits that can be provided by antioxidants, DNA repair enzymes are superior in repairing sun damage and skin health. We now know that we can attack skin damage head on.

DNA repair enzymes work to reduce wrinkles and spots, since those signs are physical manifestations of DNA damage.

How do DNA Repair Enzymes repair damage to our skin?

In a nutshell, DNA Repair Enzymes find damaged DNA, cut it out and then patch it with undamaged DNA.

Although DNA repair enzymes are still relatively new within the mainstream skincare and beauty space, the surprising finding that bacterial DNA repair enzymes can indeed function inside human cells was first demonstrated nearly 45 years ago.

Then in 2015 the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists for mechanistic studies of DNA repair, culminating many decades of research showing DNA is able to repair itself.

DNA repair enzymes were first used in patients with a high risk of skin cancers due to genetic mutations which they carried. In these patients, a decreased rate of non-melanoma skin cancers, and pre-cancerous sunspots was noted. But, also, the appearance of their skin improved! This is how the use of DNA repair enzymes segued into the aesthetic realm. We now have the luxury of combating the aging process with topical DNA repair enzymes.
